Herbemont

Herbemont

Parentage Unknown, Nicholas Herbemont 1798

This rare grape produces a pale peach colored wine, firm but tender texture and a hint of refreshing bitterness. Herbemont has a long history—it is planted on six continents and is becoming newly-discovered by new audiences. Herbemont is becoming increasingly sought after each year.

Vine Characteristics

  • Very vigorous and challenging grape.

  • Tiny, mauve-colored berries.

  • Medium-loose spaced clusters, yet very susceptible to sour rot.

  • Leaves are larger, pale green and profoundly lobed.

  • Subject to cracking during heavy rainfall during ripening because of its thin skins.

  • Exceedingly difficult and uneven ripening.

  • Frost damage can be detrimental if it blooms too soon.

Winemaker’s Notes

  • Pleasant moderate acidity, low alcohol.

  • Press juice is light pink or no color.

  • A white wine that is treated like a red.

  • Extended skin contact does not extract distinct color, nor intense aromatics.

  • Not a fruity wine.

  • Can have an oregano herbal quality.

  • Does not go through malolactic fermentation.
