Muench
Neosho x Herbemont, TVM 1886
Named after Friedrich Muench, one of the co-founders of Mount Pleasant Winery in America’s first AVA in Augusta Missouri.
Vine Characteristics
Vigorous Large berries with a grey-purple color.
Needs a lot of space and/or buds left at pruning.
Moderate cold tolerance.
Very light color juice.
Excellent chemistry that requires no amelioration.
Harvest timing is critical as the TA drops rapidly.
Highly susceptible to powdery mildew.
Moderately susceptible to Phomopsis. Otherwise, pretty good disease resistance.
Winemaker’s Notes
A very terroir expressive wine.
May yield light red or white wine, depending on the eagerness of the harvest.
However, Muench seems to show better when the juice is pressed shortly after crush, and fermented into a fresh white wine, rather than macerated on skins.
High pH, with lower alcohol potential and lower tannin.
Aromatics are moderately intense, offering notes of violet, clove, and green peppercorn.
