Captivator
Captivator
Herbert x Meladel, TVM 1902
This grape was one of T.V.Munson’s most popular varieties, widely planted around New York’s Finger Lakes district. Today, we are one of the few, if not the only, wineries producing wine from this grape.
Vine Characteristics
Vigorous with large dark green leaves.
Leaves have 3 prominent lobes with two deep sinuses, looks like an elephant’s face with ears out.
Very large hot pink berries and clusters that are sometimes shouldered.
Nice, low acid, and ideal brix accumulation suited for a white wine.
On its own, captivator has a mellow blood orange aroma.
Highly susceptible to Phomopsis and low cold tolerance.
Winemaker’s Notes
Captivator’s blood orange aroma comes through during fermentation.
Post fermentation maturation reveals a cardamon-like aroma from Brilliant.
Bell tends to tame the intensity of the other two components with its soft, fresh grassy aroma.
The resulting wine is low in acid and alcohol with an intriguing aroma.
