Lenoir

Lenoir

Parentage unknown; also known as Black Spanish, Blue French, and Jacquez

This American Heritage varietal predates the work of T.V. Munson, back to South Carolina in the 1830’s. Lenoir grew in France as well as Texas and is known for its superb disease resistance. Widely planted as Black Spanish, this full-bodied red has deep color, rich, brambly flavor and bright acidity.

Vine Characteristics

  • Very vigorous with very large dark green leaves.

  • Openly spaced large and long clusters.

  • Very small black berries.

  • Requires significant sun exposure from veraison on to convert tannin to a pleasant form and decrease vegetal flavors.

  • Significant tannin development in skins.

Winemaker’s Notes

  • Profound and intensely aromatic with distinctive herbal vegetal character and equal dark fruit aromatics.

  • Structured tannins linger in the finished wine, which also offers balanced minerality and spice notes.
